Epic Reads: Ravens and Light, Photos and Truth, Unicorns and Horses

Here’s some EPIC reads I’ve enjoyed this week!

Dorothea's Eyes.jpg

Dorothea's Eyes: Dorothea Lange Photographs the Truth by Barb Rosenstock, illustrated by Gerard DuBois. The powerful and inspiring biography of Dorothea Lange, one of the founders of documentary photography.

Unicorn and Horse.jpg

Unicorn (and Horse) by David W. Miles, illustrated by Hollie Mengert. A funny yet endearing lesson on envy with one important truth: We are sometimes unicorns. We are sometimes horses.

Corbeau et le secret de la lumiere.jpg

Corbeau et le secret de la lumière by Marie Barguirdjian, illustrated by: François Thisdale. [Yep, this book is in French! I love the beautiful illustrations, and the setting of Haida Gwaii, (formerly known as the Queen Charlotte Islands) off the coast of British Columbia]. Only the fires that humans light and maintain bring some clarity. A white crow flies over the area and overhears the conversation between a father and his daughter. In their house are hidden three chests, the smallest of which contains a secret that will transform the face of the world. Raven wants to seize this secret, he will do anything to achieve it. Having turned into a pine needle, he managed to be swallowed by the young girl and grew within her. The young woman gives birth to a child whose nose is shaped like that of a crow. As he grows up, this child will not stop asking his grandfather what is in the coffers. When at last his grandfather opens the smaller chest, he will grab the light and spread it across the face of the earth.
