Baby, Loved: A Christmas Poem

The Spirit called me
into the Light
of my Father’s world.

Now I am nestled
in Mother’s arms,.
I breathe in Mother—
love, and warmth, and nourishment.
“You are loved, Baby.”
Her voice is as gentle as her touch.
I am Baby, loved.
I am Love.

“Miriam, we have visitors,”
our guardian says.
Now I am nestled
in his strong arms.

I breathe in the guardian—
love and strength and safety.
“You are a blessing, Baby.
His voice is as sure as stone.
I am Baby, a blessing.
I am Blessing.

Cold blows into the cave
with the shepherds come from the hills.
There is talk of angels and of glad tidings.

Now I am nestled in a young shepherd’s arms
I breathe in Boy—
half-frightened, and weak and small.
“You are an angel’s promise, Baby."
His voice is as shaky as his arms.
I am Baby, promised.
I am Promise.

Now in Mother’s arms again
I look at the faces around me.
When I am grown I will fill the world.
with my Father’s promised mercy.

The frightened will become courageous,
the weak will become strong,
the small will be enough and more,
for I am Love,
and I am Blessing,
and I am Promise,
come to save my world.
