God knowing all things, being from everlasting to everlasting, behold, he sent angels to minister unto the children of men, to make manifest concerning the coming of Christ; and in Christ there should come every good thing….(Moroni 7:22)
It’s Christmas Eve and the fourth Advent candle is lit. This candle represents the Angels or peace.
An Angel announced the birth of the Saviour to the shepherds and an Angelic choir sang praises that night. I wonder if Baby Jesus heard them and, content in his mother’s arms, was lulled to sleep by their songs?
Angels were not only at Jesus’ birth but also ministered to him in the wilderness (Matthew 4:11) and, as he suffered in Gethsemane, his Father sent an angel to strength him (Luke 22:43). Poet Christina Rossetti said it well in her Christmas Carol when she wrote:
Love came down at Christmas,
Love all lovely, Love Divine,
Love was born at Christmas,
Star and Angels gave the sign.
Worship we the Godhead,
Love Incarnate, Love Divine,
Worship we our Jesus,
But wherewith for sacred sign?
Love shall be our token,
Love be yours and love be mine,
Love to God and all men,
Love for plea and gift and sign.
